Florida couple Brock and Lauren Smith work fitness groups with a lot of moms. One issue would come up time and time again: moms were criticized and harassed for breastfeeding in public.
While the couple was eating out, Brock decided to make a point about it. Lauren had to feed their baby girl in the blistering Florida heat last summer. The mom felt pressured to cover up, so she put their daughter under a blanket. The baby girl wouldn’t latch on because she was so uncomfortable.
That’s when Lauren remarked to Brock, “How would you like to eat under a blanket?”
So the curious husband put the blanket over his head while he was eating to seehow uncomfortable it felt for a child to eat while covered.
They decided to film it and upload the clip to Facebook. The response was astounding, with the video instantly going viral.
“I wish I didn’t have to eat with a blanket over my head,” said Brock in the video. “Maybe I should just go sit in the toilet.”
The father of two was extending his support to mom’s and their children who are inconvenienced by hurtful breastfeeding policies that shame women for simply wanting to feed their kids.
Brock said he made the video to address “how women have to feel anxious when feeding their babies when they’re out and about.”
Brock and Lauren want to work together to create a supportive movement where mothers don’t have to feel self-conscious about something that is perfectly natural.
