Hershey’s simplifies its classic chocolate syrup. (Hershey’s)

Hersheys is jumping on the anti-artificial bandwagon with its new Simply 5 Syrupa chocolate syrup devoid of high-fructose corn syrup, artificial preservatives and it’s made from non-GMO ingredients.

As the name suggests, the new syrup has just five ingredients: cane sugar,  organic invert cane syrup (a sweet mixture of glucose and fructose), water, cocoa and natural vanilla flavor. The first ingredient in Hersheys standard recipe is high fructose corn syrup but it actually contains less sugar per serving than Simply 5 by one gram.

The Simply 5 label also contains a QR code which customers can scan to get detailed ingredient information and nutrition facts for potential allergens.

Hershey’s has already made moves to purge other popular products of artificial additives. Last fall, the company announced that its milk chocolate Hersheys Kisses and bars would be made with flavor from real vanilla instead of an artificial extract.

Hershey’s Simply 5 Syrup is now available nationwide. But if you prefer your chocolate laden with artificial flavors and GMOs, Hershey’s still makes the original version.
