On December 26, 2013, Taylah Hemming went boating with her family in Forbes, Australia. The family planned to celebrate Boxing Day (a post-Christmas holiday in countries such as the U.K. and Australia), but their good spirits quickly disappeared as tragedy struck.

Within seconds of the boat engine being turned on, the entire boat caught on fire, engulfing Hemmingin flames. The now 21-year-old physiotherapy student was severely burned. Following the explosion, she jumped into the knee-deep water, ducking down to cover her entire body. She and her uncle were airlifted to a nearby hospital, where they were treated for burns.

Luckily, Hemming survived the fire, but she suffered severe burns all over her body.Daily Mail reported that when Hemming saw herself for the first time in a mirror, she couldn’t recognize her reflection.

After the accident, Taylah suffered from severe psychological trauma. She had anxiety and flashbacks, and was diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder.
